Looking Back

Give or take a day, it’s 10 years since I opened Yinspire studio – one class just before Christmas 2015, and then a full timetable from January 2016. It’s poignant then that today marks the end of this chapter in the studio’s life.

I wrote to you a short while ago explaining that the current timetable of group classes would end in February 2026; in the event both Della and Caroline have decided to move on at the end of this current month, and hence have taught their last classes at Yinspire – I thank them for their support and dedication.

Looking Forward

However it is not the end of Yinspire, by any means.

My classes will continue into 2026 on a smaller scale, with the studio reconfigured to use space better, and provide a more intimate facility for up to five people.

I’ll initially carry on with the Tuesday morning and Tuesday evening timetable, with the evening class also on zoom, although the timetable will almost certainly change as things evolve.

These classes, Therapeutic Yin Yoga, are open to all, and will continue to provide an unambitious nurturing environment for those who appreciate this slower approach.

If you have questions about these classes do please reach out; if the “therapeutic” description leaves you thinking “not for me” then I invite you to look past this, the class won’t be a significantly different experience for anyone who has practised with me in recent years.

I also plan to offer some short courses and workshops in 2026 focusing on topics like Yoga for Back Health; Stress and Resilience; Yoga for Healthy Ageing. More on these in due course.

I’d love to keep in touch, of course and share with you future offerings – please join my newsletter to keep in touch.

I wish everyone a happy Christmas.

This is a group class drawing on Yoga Therapy principles, and is suitable for anyone with physical or psycho emotional issues who would like to use Yoga to help their wellbeing. This could include, amongst other things, back or joint issues, anxiety, overwhelm and stress, digestive issues. Equally suitable for anyone who would simply like a slow simple unambitious class.

Expect a slow class, mostly Yin, some other practices, focused on physical and psychological wellbeing.

Suitable for all, including beginners. This is a floor based class, so participants will need to be able to get up and down unassisted, and be comfortable sitting and laying on the floor.

These classes run 10am and 18:30 on a Tuesday, starting October 7th 2025, with a class duration of 75 to 90 minutes. The evening class is also streamed on zoom.

Book This Class

The class is taught by Jessica Garbett, who is an experienced Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist (Minded Institute London, CNHC registered)

The BBC recently run an article “Does yoga have a conspiracy theory problem?”

The article covers propagation of theories about Covid being a hoax, and allied anti vaccination and anti mask/protection sentiment. These sentiments are linked closely to far right conspiracy theory groups, who I will not name explicitly on here..

Following on from this, British Wheel of Yoga, the self appointed – and thus meaningless and without authority – “governing body for yoga in UK” has issued a statement:

“A message to our members and followers:

“Following a number of comments and enquiries we have been asked for the formal position of the BWY regarding the Covid vaccine.

“As a charity and a membership organisation the mission of the BWY is to promote a greater understanding of yoga through education and training, and to support its members in their practice and teaching. BWY adopts no political position and offers no view or guidance on other matters. Therefore, in the interests of clarity we invite you, our members and followers, to make a decision over the Covid vaccine that sits comfortably with your own views, and your own conscience and we request that the choices and opinions of others, whether they accord with your own or not, are respected. In the spirit of yoga we must all make our own assessment and give everyone else the space to do the same.

“In that same spirit we also respect that not all members will agree with us; but we nonetheless do not align ourselves with any particular viewpoint. It is not within our remit as an organisation and as members, showing respect for the individual journey and “truth” of others is paramount.” (BWY 17th February 2021)

As the principal of Yinspire Yoga and Yinspire Yoga Therapy, I make a statement as follows:

Covid is a real and present health risk, causing a high number of fatalities and serious long term illnesses

Yinspire and myself are not members of, nor aligned in anyway to, British Wheel of Yoga

I distance myself from the BWYs ambivalence which I consider reckless

I distance myself from any conspiracy theories circulating within the Yoga world

Satya (truth) and Ahimsa (non harming) are two key principles of Yoga. Taken together I consider it difficult to reach a conclusion other than following WHO, NHS and Government advice around taking individual and collective social precautions, and having the vaccine when offered

I doubt anybody likes the loss of freedoms we have experienced in the UK over the last 11 months, and I for one look forward to being able to shop, socialise and travel freely, as well as being able to run Yoga classes again. But for now, we need to follow the advice of Medical and Science professionals.

Vectis Radio is a community station, based at Riverside in Newport, and having previously been Riverside’s treasurer, there was a feeling of nostalga turning into the carpark. Older, yes. Wiser, hopefully?

I was due to appear on Judy and James’ weekly afternoon show, which takes a magazine style format. I suppose I’m light entertainment!

Yes, I was a little nervous, being interviewed isn’t something I’ve done before, other than Alberts Gang on Radio Solent 42 years ago when I was somewhat younger. Anyway, I was soon put at ease, plied with coffee and water, led into the studio and off we go.

Amid lots of on air, “I’m with Jessica from Yinspire yoga” and “we’ll be back with more from Jessica after the break”, and off air “back in 20 seconds” type things, and some suitable mellow music – Deva Premal was my suggestion, but the additional tracks James chose fitted well – we talked about an introduction to yoga, how I fell into Yoga, Yin Yoga, different types of Yoga and its accessibility to all, and the Island yoga scene.

An hour whizzed by, and soon it was the end of our allotted hour. I could easily have done another hour; how listeners would have felt, who knows!

All in a days work, and hopefully I sparked some curiosity and helped to share Yoga’s special blend of mind and body wellbeing.

If you missed it – shame on you! – theres a podcast on Vectis Radios website
